Invocation No. 1: “Exhaust”
”Exhaust” is the first part of a musical triptych, entitled “Invocations” and dedicated to my father. Each of
the three movements of this larger work represents a stanza from an inscribed personal prayer. This first movement contemplates the phases of our lives when great physical
and emotional suffering is present, invokes transcendence, and seeks intervention. I chose to express the raw, emotive quality of this material through the exposed and vulnerable instrumental choice of the string
trio. This instrumental decision differentiates “Exhaust” from the other two movements, which present a more loving, sentimental and hopeful vision for the future.
Structurally, “Exhaust” follows a traditional Rondo form. The “A” section evokes the melodic setting of this private prayer’s first stanza.
Each musical phrase of the section symbolizes a literary phrase,
and aims to represent it like
a traditional text setting.
The “B” and “C” sections attempt to express the abstract feelings
of frustration, grief and anger
that accompany the physical and psychological experience of personal suffering.
The “A” section returns three times, each time embedded in a contrasted texture. Following the last return, the movement culminates in a codetta, as the trio slows to an unsettling close
on a dark minor chord with a singular dissonant tone.
